In 1967 Dundee United were invited to USA to play in the United Soccer Association competition, under the name of Dallas Tornado. They played in tangerine and the wife of the then manager Jerry Kerr persuaded the club to adopt the new colours, which they did from 1969.

These colours are now famous and despite slight variations, mostly involving black shorts, it has remained the same to this date.
