23 year old Thompson has received a shock call-up to the national squad to face France in Paris later this month. Joining him will be fellow team-mate Paul Gallagher.

Thompson admits to being stunned at the promotion, and had a difficult time convincing his parents it was indeed true. There is no place in the squad for arguably United's best player Charlie Miller, who has been struggling to reach peak fitness, though he has been working hard to improve this of late.

Berti Vogts, Scotland's new German manager, has opted for a mixture of youth and experience in his first squad. Included are three teenagers, Gary Caldwell (on loan at Hibs from Newcastle) Kevin McNaughton (Aberdeen) and Stephen Hughes (Rangers).

Full squad:

Douglas (Celtic), Gallacher (Dundee Utd), Sullivan (Tottenham), Caldwell (Newcastle), Crainey (Celtic), Dailly (West Ham), Matteo (Leeds), McNaughton (Aberdeen), Pressley (Hearts), Weir (Everton), Cameron (Wolves), B Ferguson (Rangers), Hughes (Rangers), Gemmill (Everton), Lambert (Celtic), McNamara (Celtic), Severin (Hearts), Crawford (Dunfermline), Freedman (Crystal Palace), McCann (Rangers), Miller (Wolves), Thompson (Dundee Utd).
