Discovery Cup Date

It has been announced that United will tackle Dundee for the Discovery Cup at Dens Park on Saturday, July 22, 2006. Although last years event was a great success both clubs felt that having two competitive games within 24 hours was asking too much of the players so close to the start of the season.

Last year saw the two city teams meet on the Saturday afternoon at Tannadice, immediately after the match up between the two other teams involved – Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday. On that occasion United secured a 3-0 victory which ensured city bragging rights even before the tangerines went on to claim the trophy the following day at Dens. The highlight of that day, apart from the rather nice placard display that the Arabs were displaying, was a Stuart Duff goal in which he beat two defenders and then curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner. It will also be the first managerial derby for both Craig Brewster and Alan Kernaghan- if both are still in their respective jobs come July. Both managers will no doubt be keen to get their derby records off to the perfect start.

With the format taking the form of a one off derby match this season, the cup winners should be presented with the trophy immediately after the game and any bragging rights will be carried over to the local pubs thereafter.  There is no doubt that the fans will once again turn out in great numbers to watch the event and for us Arabs it will surely be the case of the first competitive outing for the Dundee United team – Brewster Style.

Most Arabs will be delighted that the game is being played on the ground where so many of United's major triumphs have been performed.
