End of Year Review

 Season highlight?

Hampden on Saturday was one of the best days of my life. The sea of Tangerine and just the fantastic atmosphere and result will live forever in the memory and the silverware is a long overdue reward for the resurgence of Dundee United over the past few seasons. Hard to see past that, really.

 Season lowlight?

Initially, losing Craig Levein, and the Ibrox drubbing that followed in the aftermath, felt like it was game-over for our season’s aspirations but the emergence of Peter Houston as a manager par-excellence in his own right sugared that particular pill.

Lee Wilkie’s enforced retirement is tragic at such a young age so that’s probably the lowest ebb.

 Manager’s report card?

Ibrox aside, it would have to be full marks for Houstie for making the transition almost seamless and keeping the team spirit that’s defined this current squad, alive and strong. Oh, and the small matter of bringing the Scottish Cup to Tannadice and giving us our best SPL finishing position in years. Thank you from every single Arab.

Player of the season?

Paul Dixon has been stoic for United, when not injured but, despite only being on loan to us, Andy Webster has epitomised everything good about United this season. His team-talk galvanised the lads after the Ibrox defeat and he has been different class in the heart of our defence whilst clearly imparting his tactical know-how to the younger players like Garry Kenneth.

Expectations for next season?

Now you’re asking! The secret of following Dundee United is never to have expectations. That way, anything good that comes our way is a beautiful surprise. I’ve walked out of Hampden empty-handed too many times to let myself have expectations.

What needs to be on the club’s summer shopping list?

Milk, bread, jam…oh aye, and Andy Webster!!

Which players should the club be offloading?

Even if I was thinking of one I wouldn’t put it in print. Some of our best players at Tannadice are the ones that have had some of the worst stick from some in the stands and it never helps. Confidence is a wondrous gift for a footballer.

If you could give the manager one piece of advice, what would it be?

Sign on the dotted line please as this squad has loads more to come. Try and keep as many of the players as we can at Tannadice. The future is bright, shiny and Tangerine.
